Description
This was the first time I’ve ever seen a red rainbow and it was a spectacular event. The histogram on my camera was very unique, two strong points, red and grey were the only colours in the sky.
It was the second time I had been to the gorge, the first time was on a mountain bike, so I didn’t have a great recall of the scenery from that trip. I turned up before dawn and hoped I was in a good spot. As it gradually became daylight I was seeing a grey and drizzly morning, at this stage I wasn’t expecting to get any ‘money shots’. I remember looking around and seeing something very peculiar, it was the right hand end of the red rainbow, at the time I didn’t realise this. When I realised what I was seeing I started to panic. I realised I was seeing something very rare and very special.
Red Rainbows occur when the sun is right on the horizon, from what I understand with in 1 degree from the horizon. Astronomy.com provide a detailed explanation on what causes a red rainbow.
